Can Olive Oil Help Prevent Alzheimers ?

In Alzheimers Disease, News by admin

Some new research has found that the Mediterranean diet which consists of fish, vegetables and lots of virgin olive oil, is excellent for preventing brain plaques and loss of memory in old age. This diet also assists in the reduction of strokes and heart disease which are ever increasing health issues at the moment.

Trials performed on mice showed that virgin olive oil fed to mice, resulted in lower levels of amyloid plaques, which are extracellular deposits of amyloid beta in the grey matter of the brain, and big differences in nerve cell appearance and function.  Seeing patients in the hospital suffering from dementia and strokes, hits home as to how debilitating these ailments can be.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to know, that by incorporating such a simple thing in our diet, may help prevent such debilitating diseases.

In further trials the “plan is to give 12-month-old Alzheimer’s mice (which have already developed plaques) extra virgin olive oil to see if it can stop or reverse the disease.”  This will be very interesting to see how the results pan out.
