Have We Got It All Wrong? – Is it The Carbs That Are Bad in Our Diet?

Can you remember the time before the “powers that be ” changed our food pyramid around and started saying that it is the saturated fats that are bad for us and we should reduce our consumption.  Before this time there was not a big thing about carbohydrates. Potatoes which are complex carbohydrates, containing starch molecules, were the most common carbohydrate eaten. The evening meal consisted mostly of meat and 3 vegetables. Then it became fashionable for there to be a diet where we were to eat more carbs like pasta, rice, wraps etc and less animal fats such as meat, milk, butter and cheese. That was the time when low fat milk, cheese and yoghurt etc came into being. We were advised to cut the fat off our meat and chicken and only eat lean meat cuts. But is it only a certain type of fat that is no good for us?

Recently there has been mention about the ‘ ketogenic’ diet especially in relation to cancer. This is a diet where you cut down on your carbohydrates and eat more fats. For an extract of an article on this Ketogenic diet see the following:-

“Western cultures today enjoy a diet rich in the delicacies that our ancestors did not consume on a regular basis such as grain, sugar, and starch. Research continues to show that sugar is the main source of fuel which feeds cancer and contributes to an inflammatory environment. Sugar essentially increases the risk for cancer and disease. The real solution for treating cancer and disease is not found in a man-made pill but rather is found in regulating the metabolic functions within our bodies. Ketones are metabolized by fatty acids in the liver for energy. (This source of fuel is capable of crossing the blood brain barrier and is an excellent form of energy for neurons.) When the body lacks glucose, which is its first source of fuel, ketones are created in its absence. You can effectively produce ketones too by limiting the carbohydrates in your diet to less than 80 grams daily and protein to no more than 1.2 grams of protein/per kg lean body mass. With ketogenic diets, lowering carbohydrates will reduce your levels of glucose, the fuel that feeds cancer cells. This will put your body into ketosis and will assist in depleting cancer cells of their energy supply.”

In a number of articles found recently it is stated, that by eating lots of carbohydrates, such as, processed flour cakes and biscuits, sugary foods and drink, the body stores these excess food energy as fat. It goes on to say that these sugary food contribute to the plaques in our brain, which in turn, are related to dementia and other similar diseases. With regards to cancer rates, it is very disturbing to see the ever increasing number of people presenting at hospitals with a recent diagnosis of cancer. So is this the answer to this increase of diseases in western society? Cut out the junk food and try the ketogenic diet?
